About this deal

So is this a good or a bad thing? It depends. Overall, having the child higher on the bike (and in relation to your body) usually means there’s less interference with your pedal stroke – you’ll have to bow your legs out a bit less. Nice right? The comfortable seat and adjustable foot straps can accommodate kids upto a maximum weight of 15 kg A low profile adaptor remains on your steerer tube so be sure you have enough steerer tube space before purchasing

The Do Little’s footrest is a fixed metal bar that cannot be adjusted. The “loose” design of the Do Little’s footrest is to allow the child’s foot to easily be released from the footrest in the event of a crash. Do Little’s belief is that it is better to have the child easily separated from the bike versus potentially having their leg or foot tweaked by the footrest. If you’re looking for the cream-of-the-crop front child bike seat, the Thule RideAlong Mini is it. High-quality and durable like other Thule seats, comfort and best-fit is where the RideAlong Mini really shines. If you plan on using the Shotgun Pro seat until your child is 4 or 5 (or a really tall 3.5-year-old like Carrie has), you may run into an issue with the higher saddle of the Shotgun Pro. Because the Pro sits higher, its “sweet spot” for use is a bit more narrow than the original Shotgun or the Mac Ride. The footrests on the Do Little, Shotgun, and Mac Ride all extend down from the seat mount and rest of the sides of the down tube. The Mac Ride and the Shotgun also have rubberized straps that can be adjusted to fit closely against the child’s foot. Designed to easily fit onto virtually every size mountain bike frame, the Shotgun is really popular with parents wanting to introduce their children to the joys of off road cycling from an early age. Your child will love riding up front when they have their own handlebars and grips to hold onto. The shotgun bars provide a warmer alternative for little hands, and stop your co-pilot from playing with your gears, brakes and dropper post! There are many different factors to consider when purchasing a front child bike seat without a harness, and the best seat for you depends on a handful of factors. Having tested out these seats with our crew of mini testers on various bikes, here’s our breakdown of what you need to look for when determining the best open-style (no harness) front-mounted seat for your child and your bike. Please note that this seat differs from some of the other cheap imported bike seats at a similar price, as it fastens to the top tube (crossbar) and not the seat post or stem. For this reason, it's not suitable for step-through frames (or if you have a very small frame size).

This seat fits normal stems with a diameter of 20-28 mm (0.78-1.1 inches) and ahead stems with a diameter of 28.6 mm (1.125 inches). Open-style or “no harness” front-mounted child bike seats are mounted closer to the adult and are meant to fit kids ages 2 to 5. For parents that like the experience of riding with a front mounted seat but have an older child that’s too big for a traditional seat, this style is an ideal option. The shotgun seat is designed for kids 2 - 5 years old, and fits all mountain bikes – including bikes with steep, sloping or tapered top tubes. It's even suitable for carbon frames. There are two main types of bike seats available: rear and front bike seats. With both a rear bike seat and a front seat, some parents can travel with two children at once. In this article we'll look at a range of front-mounted bike seats for your baby, toddler or preschooler. Most of these kids bike seats will seat a child up to 15 kg.

Product Reviews

FOOTRESTS MOST ADJUSTABLE: The Pro has seven different foot peg heights set at small intervals. This allows you to be more precise for your child’s comfort, but is a minor benefit. They are also much easier to adjust than the 2.0’s.

Become an ENDURO supporter and let’s shape the bike scene together and make mountain biking even better! Are you with us? On our Santa Cruz bikes with three full-sized spacers, there was plenty of clearance and absolutely no issues, as you can see above. We were really impressed with the ingenuity of the design of the Shotgun Pro’s legs. There are two leg width settings. The “narrow” setting will fit most bikes, while the “wide” setting will fit bikes with a top tube or down tube that is wider than 80mm. The wider setting is mostly for ebikes. While the Mac Ride’s legs can also be widened for an e-bike, we just thought Shotgun’s design was particularly clever. The size of the adult rider should also be taken into account when buying an open-style front child bike seat. A taller and/or larger-framed adult on a large size bike will always have more space and likely be more comfortable using these types of seats compared to a smaller adult on a smaller bike. The Thule Yepp 2 Mini is a light, and easy to use front bike seat. It gives your baby or toddler a full view of the road (or cycle path) and because it is made out of water-repellent materials, stays dry and easy to clean (great during those potty training months!).

Have an installation question?

Don’t just assume that the factory setting is the best setting. Depending on your child’s size and your size, you’ll need to play around with the best fit for you. To the uninitiated, it can be quite alarming when first looking at the Mac Ride and Shotgun kids seats. Where are the straps and seat belts? It’s true, aside from the footstraps there are no straps to hold your kid in. But have no fear, just like when they ride their own bikes, once on, straddling the top tube and in the footstraps, your kid feels really secure. After a couple of minutes of car park testing, our team felt 100% confident on mellow trails, with toddlers from 2 years old. As soon as your kid jumps on it all makes sense and feels very safe. Will a front-mounted MTB kids seat fit my bike? With any child bike seat, if you fall or crash, your child is coming crashing along with you. However, there are safety benefits of different styles of front mounted seats. The legs (with attached footrests) of the Shotgun Pro are height-adjustable so accommodate the length of your child’s legs. Our 42.5″ rider had the legs set to their maximum length, while our 33″ rider had them set to their shortest length. Don’t get too far from the car or home – it’s easy to get carried away with a tailwind behind you, but remember if your kid gets tired or upset, you have to get them home.
