Priyanka Chopra shines bright in a performance that feels so natural. She has played the girl-next-door kind of romcoms in so many films in Bollywood that ‘Love Again’ felt like just so easy for her. The way she handled the nuances, and the emotional bits made you realise how seasoned of an actress she is. There were scenes where there were long takes with just her face on the screen and nothing else moving, and she managed to tell so much with just her expressions.

Mira Ray and her boyfriend John are very much in love, and often communicate via flirtatious messages. Directly after they have a loving interaction in a café, he goes outside and is promptly hit by a car in plain view. As it should, Love Again does conjure some genuine emotion – it’s hard not to feel something watching Mira read through old texts with John to Dion’s music. And it offers some treats for fans of the singer: a shot of Céline shedding a single tear while looking moved, a moment of Céline sing-talking, a chance for her to deliver the line “OK, Mr Underwear” and have it make sense in context. I appreciate Love Again for this far more than I appreciate its merits as a romcom, which it meets in fits and starts consistently hampered by the presence of cheap-looking text on screen (at this point, I would rather read a phone over someone’s shoulder). Andrew Dunn’s cinematography is another high point for ‘Love Again’. The way the beautiful locales of New York have been captured make it worth the watch. It manages to build that corny Christmas movie sort of a feel where you know everything will be all right. The snowfall in the climax is just sheer perfection. To add to this, the usage of the various bokeh filters to make the scenes look even brighter was a masterstroke. Retrieved May 6, 2023. James C. Strouse’s writing is pretty much the weakest link in ‘Love Again’. The premise is predictable, and the entire plot can be figured out right from the trailer itself. There isn’t any amount of ambiguity or suspense left for the viewer to find out during the climax. It happens with almost all romcoms, but still, there are few that manage to give the viewer something unique to help them remember the film. Sadly, there wasn’t anything like that in ‘Love Again’s writing which will make it memorable for ages. You might just binge it for a bit of feel-good factor a few times whenever you’re feeling low. Two things break Rob’s iciness: heartrending text messages from a mysterious person he soon deduces to be the gorgeous Mira, and an assignment to profile Céline Dion as she embarks on her first tour since the death of her husband/manager Réné Angélil from cancer. The former is a a decently realistic and moving premise (I would probably do something similar) given a never un-creepy twist. (Although, to be fair, comparing Rob’s love for a stranger in a one-sided text relationship to falling for her much-older manager on the eve of the Eurovision Song Contest, as Céline does in a scene that left my mouth open, is gonzo logic befitting of the singer.) The latter is a great set-up, both for slipping in actual Céline songs, music videos and iconography and for witnessing Dion hand-act as a subject who turns every interview into a therapy session. Well, it wasn't as awful as I had imagined it would be. Foremost, poor Sam Heughan just can't catch a a good script, a good opportunity...a good director? I dunno. Maybe this Scottish hunk will always be Jamie from Outlander. He's very good in outlander, strong and confident in his performances, but in other works he continually fails to engage the role. Or maybe he's just not enough box office material to get offered an opportunity to show his acting chops beyond the kilted hero. He's not connecting on screen, despite his chiseled good looks. It's a disappointment for one who's watched his career over the years.In lieu of writing the profile on Céline, Rob instead writes how she and her music inspired him to pursue love, which he found with Mira. He swears that she has transformed him and begs she give him a second chance, proposing they meet where he first began to hear the music again. Rob's boss publicly chews him out for going against his assignment, but quietly praises him, promising him a podcast.
