About this deal

So, he jumps to a New York City job with a “start-up” and starts to make things happen for himself and this company. After Japanese filmmakers were inspired by rumors of the initial breakthrough to make " Kaiju" movies such as Godzilla and its successors, the creatures were dubbed Kaiju. When it first came across my radar, it seemed exactly the breath of fresh air I needed to recharge my reading routine.

But the chances are pretty good you won’t experience either side effect, much less both at the same time.Tom offers Jamie a job with his own employer, and Jamie, again out of options, goes in for the interview, is accepted, and is soon on a plane to Thule Air Base in Greenland. It also needs to be said how wonderfully diverse the characters are and how that is treated as a given. It’s just delightful this way, even for those of us who before this book thought “Kaiju” was just a funny word. Mankind first became aware of this world in the wake of World War II, when the use of atomic bombs opened temporary portals between the worlds, to which and through which the creatures were attracted by the radiation fallout, on which they feed.

The author said it himself in the notes at the end, it's a popcorn movie of a book and I probably would have rated it a little higher but the quips were really really annoying. It's short and sweet and I didn't dislike it, but I also wasn't particularly blown away by it either though I don't think I was supposed to be. La vera perla sono ovviamente i personaggi e i dialoghi, che mantengono un tono leggero e allegro anche di fronte ad eventi drammatici. Other readers may have assumed, like I did, that Jamie was a man because of the job they were recruited for.

A lot of this novel felt mostly like setup; the real plot conflict didn't show up until the last third. Jamie Gray gets demoted from an executive position right as the 2020 pandemic hits New York, by the Boss From Hell. A fortuitous encounter with an old college acquaintance leads to a new job on an alternate Earth where there are nuclear powered Kaiju and all sorts of other crazy creatures. I have the privilege of being able to retreat from reality for a few days when the world seems too heavy.

All in all a really good, geeky, sci fi, read that was a lot of fun that I really enjoyed that hooked me into the world but not too heavy. It was a top ten finalist for the 2023 Locus Awards, [6] and went on to win the 2023 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. That and the tendency among KPS staff to celebrate with alcohol and feasting (plus ukeleles and staff change-over rituals). Unfortunately, this event weakened the barrier between worlds, and Bella planting herself at the very location the event occurred is keeping the barrier from rehealing. So Jamie and his team need to get creative, evade huge-ass tree-crabs, and get some Twilight monsters to get a groove on, all while fending off more sinister threats. This book's first 20% read like a checklist for political correcteness: ethnic diversity (check), pro-Covid (and other) vaccines (check), pro diverse gender-identity (check).

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Letta la versione kindle, è una storia assolutamente verosimile, che parte pre pandemia e si evolve con elementi fantascientifici assolutamente affascinanti. Simple job, fantastic pay, and you get to help animals, who we all know are better than humans anyway. The book tells a complete story, but creates a world and set of characters that could easily be used in a sequel. My tablet briefly flopped out of my hand, and I caught it before it skittered off the beanbag and onto the floor. Yet when I heard about this book, a Jurassic Park esque tale, full of banter and mayhem, I was certain this would be right up my street. Scalzi gleefully imagines insane biological systems, and I just went along for the ride without worrying about whether it made any sense or not. Being in a real jungle of another dimension, trekking dangerously on the lush ground crawling with danger.
