The author said it himself in the notes at the end, it's a popcorn movie of a book and I probably would have rated it a little higher but the quips were really really annoying. It's short and sweet and I didn't dislike it, but I also wasn't particularly blown away by it either though I don't think I was supposed to be. A lot of this novel felt mostly like setup; the real plot conflict didn't show up until the last third. A fortuitous encounter with an old college acquaintance leads to a new job on an alternate Earth where there are nuclear powered Kaiju and all sorts of other crazy creatures. I have the privilege of being able to retreat from reality for a few days when the world seems too heavy.

All in all a really good, geeky, sci fi, read that was a lot of fun that I really enjoyed that hooked me into the world but not too heavy. It was a top ten finalist for the 2023 Locus Awards, [6] and went on to win the 2023 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. That and the tendency among KPS staff to celebrate with alcohol and feasting (plus ukeleles and staff change-over rituals).
