Description

Aligning your chain using the Laser Monkey helps to improve your motorcycle’s handling characteristics and optimise power delivery. Those who ride without their drivechain properly aligned have less control of the bike at high speeds. This job is a piece of cake, right? You just line up the adjuster with the marks on each side of the swing arm, and you are done. How hard is that? What many people don’t know is that on many bikes, the marks on the swing arm may not be even accurate due to manufacturing tolerances, and by using them you can unintentionally misalign your wheel, causing a variety of problems. Poor road conditions, hitting an object (such as a nasty pothole) and excessive tyre wear are just a few examples of how rear wheels can become misaligned, and manually adjusting this each time can be incredibly time-consuming. Second traffic light turn right into Neptune Street, Paarden Eiland. 5 min (4.6 km). Pass Marine Drive Service Road on left. Take second left, Shropshire Street. 1 min (300 m)

There are various motorcycle chain tools available to help you work on your own bike chain, ranging from DIY handheld devices to heavier-duty versions aimed more at professionals. We’ve put together a list of some of the best and most useful whatever your level. The Laser Monkey’s compact design means it’s small enough to be carried with you on your bike. How to use the Laser Monkey and align your motorcycle’s chain The chain is meticulously cleaned/lubed every 250km-500km. Most cars leave me for dead at the lights so the chain should still be in its infancy. There are several types of chain depending on the design of the links themselves and there are also different types of links that are designed to allow the chain to be replaced. Larger items may incur additional carriage charges, including but not limited to 4x4 and SUV tyres. The laser light is visible in a line over the entire chain length and enables a simple and fast visualisation. For belt drive, two belt markings (included in the scope of delivery) are attached to the toothed belt. The SE-CAT-Line is ingeniously suitable for this application, because both belt markings can be illuminated at the same time and thus it is visible if the rear wheel axle is correctly positioned. It doesn’t matter what make or model your bike is or whether it’s chain or belt-driven, the Laser Monkey provides accurate alignment on all motorcycles.

Step 2: Turn the laser on and face towards the closet part of the chain or belt. Ensure the laser is centralised. Get on N1. Follow N1 to Marine Drive, R27 / Milnerton / Bloubergstand Exit – Exit 4,. 33 min (53.8 km). Continue on Marine Drive Step 3: Point the laser at the furthest visible part of the chain or belt by the engine. This will now show whether your wheel is correctly aligned. Adjusting the wheel on the swingarm is often extremely inaccurate as most swing arms are constructed using fabricated components. The Laser Monkey however ensures unrivalled accuracy, as a laser is sent directly down the centre of the chain or belt, enabling precise alignment. The vast majority of motorcycles use a chain to carry drive from the output of the gearbox to the rear wheel. Sure, there are shaft-driven bikes – notably BMWs – as well as belt-driven examples but the humble chain is by far the easiest and most reliable when it comes to moving torque to the rear wheel.

If you have a look around, you will see many different ways of measuring wheel alignment, from simple and inexpensive, to crazily complex and wallet-emptying. However, there is one simple fact that you need to take into consideration before you go too crazy with some of the solutions out there. This is the reality you only have two adjustments for your rear wheel, the left and right adjusters on the swing-arm. That’s the only thing you can change. So using lasers to align the rear wheel to the front, or long reference rods to measure one side against the other is a waste of time and money. Great bit of kit. Together with the chain monkey makes adjusting the chain on my 2009 GSXR-1000 literally a 30 sec job, and no guess work!”– Rob
